The Trump movement's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his intentions for a gilded ballroom twice the size of the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of casualties due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and rising, and presently research forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no former commander would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.

As bewildering as it is to observe the chief executive try to upend the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – among senior generations a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into an icon of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this has happened more slowly, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and because the quickly increasing segment among Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.
It is emphatically absolutely not the account of an authoritative monarch arising; instead, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a storage space, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to avoid secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his message concerns compassion for others, particularly for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to violence is to turn the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to teach the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever an individual takes your outer garment you should give the person your additional clothing too.
The apparent and straightforward reality that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a form of radical love focused on the poor has perpetually caused Christianity rather a controversial faith: attractive to the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest of Us
So I have been heartened to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump arise in this past year. It has been great solace to participate in developing the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to participate in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners at every demonstration and requests to the best parts of American history.
We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or refuse?
The country is optimally secured, in other words, through connection to the highest in US heritage, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to elements that cause it to be distinctive and wonderful, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In both situations does it suggest pretending the most damaging of both America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it represents both modesty and conviction, a combination that serious US believers should be comfortable with.
